Amsterdam Canal Tours
The canal cruises are a popular way to explore Amsterdam from the water. Every year approximately 2,5 million of tourists discover the city this way. The town, known also as Venice of the North, seems to be deliberately created to admire it from the water. This sedate pace of traveling lets you to gaze at stunning buildings and rich greenness. Looking at Amsterdam's old merchant houses from the canal boats does justice and you see a lot more than if you are on foot.
The canal boats run from many spots in the town like Rokin, Anna Frank house, Leidseplein, Heineken Brewery, and many boats run as often as every 30 minutes. There are several companies vying for your custom with most located in close proximity to the Central Station. Prices and routes are basically the same.
The highlights of almost every cruise include seeing the Magere Brug - a narrow double-leave drawbridge across the River Amstel, and the gables of the stately homes in the wealthier areas. Another great moment is the point where you can see seven round arch bridges spanning a narrow canal.
I do it every time I am in Amsterdam; it is not the quickest mode of transport but gives you a chance to chill out and see the city from a different perspective.
